  • Rich DeSimone named president of WQIS

    January 31, 2007 (New York, NY) Richard D. DeSimone, President of Ocean Marine at Travelers Insurance, has agreed to serve as Chairman of WQIS, The Water Quality Insurance Syndicate. WQIS is the largest underwriter of pollution liability insurance in the U.S for marine vessels.

    Rich was asked to chair WQIS as a result of his 30+ year career in marine insurance, as well as his in-depth knowledge of and passion for the marine industry. He joined St. Paul Insurance in 2000 as President of Ocean Marine, and continues to lead the combined Ocean Marine operations subsequent to the merger with Travelers in 2004. Travelers is a leading provider of Ocean Marine insurance, with an extensive product portfolio including cargo, hull, liabilities and luxury yacht.

    Rich started his marine insurance career at Atlantic Mutual in 1976, and served in various Marine Underwriting Management positions until being promoted to Senior Vice President of the Marine Insurance Division in 1990.

    A 1971 graduate of the City University of New York - Baruch College, he received a Masters in Transportation Management from the State University of New York - Maritime College in 1977. In addition, Rich received the Associate in Marine Insurance Management designation in 1979 and attended the Insurance Institute of America's Advanced Executive Education Program at the Wharton School - University of Pennsylvania in 1994.

    He has been actively involved in a number of industry organizations and is a past Chairman of the American Institute of Marine underwriters and served as President of the International Union of Marine Underwriters from 2002 - 2003. He is the immediate past chairman of the National Cargo Bureau and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the American Bureau of Shipping.

    Prior to his career in the insurance industry he was a Lieutenant in the US Navy serving from 1972 to 1975.

  • Sean Dalton receives Distinguished Service Award from the American Institute of Marine Underwriters

    November 16, 2006 (New York, NY) Sean M. Dalton, Vice President of Ocean Marine for Travelers, received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU) at their annual meeting on November 16, 2006. The Distinguished Service Award is designed to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Ocean Marine Insurance Industry, aside from their normal course of employment. Sean expressed deep gratitude to the members of AIMU for this recognition.

    Sean joined Travelers in his current position in 2003, after 15 years with Atlantic Mutual and Swiss Re. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the US Merchant Marine Academy, a MS degree from SUNY Maritime College, and the CPCU, AMIM and CCLA designations. Sean also served as a Lieutenant in the US Naval Reserve from 1988 through 1999.
