Meet some of our people to find out what life at Travelers is really like.

Travelers has been named by BusinessWeek as one of the “Best Places to Launch a Career” in the magazine's annual ranking of employers across the country. This is Travelers’ third year being named to the list.

“Travelers is pleased to be regarded as a top company for entry-level employees,” said John Clifford, executive vice president, Human Resources. “As a company we are committed to providing our employees with opportunities for leadership and professional development at every stage of their careers.”

One of the advantages Travelers offers entry-level employees is the opportunity to participate in one of 12 Leadership or Development Programs. The Leadership Development Programs allow participants to rotate every six to nine months through several areas within a department they designate as a field of interest, such as financial management or information technology. Participants learn by doing and, at the conclusion of the two to five years of rotational assignments, have a better idea of which opportunities within the company are the best fit for them. The Development Programs allow entry-level employees from across the country to become skilled in a specific business unit of the company, including claim and underwriting, through on-the-job and classroom training.

“Coming out of college, I was looking for a place to start a career, not just a place to work,” said Jamie Jones, a member of the Information Technology Leadership Development Program (ITLDP) in St. Paul, Minn. “I wasn’t sure what a career in insurance would be like. Through the ITLDP, I was able to rotate through different areas and responsibilities. This not only allowed me to see the numerous career opportunities available at Travelers, but has also enabled me to pursue the areas I was most interested in.”

Like Jones, many entry-level employees have no idea what a career in insurance is really like. That’s why Travelers recently launched whatyouvebeenmissing.com, a site made up entirely of comments, photos and videos submitted by current employees, offering them the chance to “tell their Travelers story” while giving potential candidates – both entry-level and seasoned professionals – a glimpse into the culture at Travelers.

“There are so many opportunities at Travelers for new graduates,” said Matt Hamlet, vice president, Talent Acquisition. “The ‘What You’ve Been Missing’ site helps us communicate that there’s more to a career in insurance than they might think.”

BusinessWeek ranks companies based on an extensive survey given to college career services directors, employers and college students. Respondents are asked to comment on hiring practices, pay scales, benefits and overall work environment. Ranked number 32 out of 50 companies, Travelers is listed among such industry leaders as Deloitte & Touche, General Electric, General Mills and IBM. The 2009 ranking appears in the September 14, 2009, issue of the magazine.
