Our Bond & Financial Products Underwriting Development Program offers a unique and challenging opportunity to develop a successful career through the underwriting and marketing of our Surety and Management Liability insurance products.
A career in underwriting is challenging and stimulating, and includes a dynamic blend of analytical, selling and marketing skills. At Travelers, our underwriters are responsible for gathering and researching pertinent information and then using their analytical skills to evaluate the acceptability of business and institutional risk. But they are more than just analysts – underwriters use strong interpersonal skills to build solid relationships with agents and clients. They also manage profitable portfolios of business, while building strategic partnerships with agents and brokers.
Program Components
This program is divided into three components:
- The first component includes training on the day-to-day operations of the office. Participants are immersed in the dynamics of underwriting and reviewing files as well as being involved in agency visits. Participants are assigned to a mentor/coach who provides guidance and direction as they complete self-study materials about Bond & Financial Products and their business unit.
- The second component includes participants attending formal underwriting training sessions, with case studies and account reviews. They also take part in various professional development courses, including professional selling skills, personality types and business etiquette. Throughout this component, there is time to interact with a variety of Bond & Financial Products leadership team members.
- The third component focuses on participants working with their designated files, accounts and book of business in their assigned region. During this time, they have the opportunity to collaborate with peers and managers across the country.
