Explore the Underwriting Opportunity
Some of our best and brightest new graduates begin their careers as underwriters. Follow the career path below to learn more about the journey from an underwriter to a manager at Travelers Canada.
- Financial Analyst/Underwriter Trainee : We offer our trainees an extensive training program designed to provide information about our businesses and products via formal academic training and practical work experience.
You will learn to develop underwriting, strategy and sales skills and spend the majority of your time producing and underwriting new and renewal business while building and maintaining relationships with brokers.
- Underwriter (Associate Account Executive): As an underwriter, you’ll start to assume more of a lead role in underwriting new and renewal business – including building and maintaining productive relationships with assigned brokers. You also may have opportunities to work with clients throughout Canada and the United States.
An underwriter usually has two to four years of professional work experience.
- Senior Underwriter/Underwriting Specialist (Account Executive): At this level, you have mastered the intricacies of the business and demonstrated leadership. You will be responsible for managing a portfolio of clients.
With the increased responsibility you will be expected to take on more of a leadership role, which includes managing complex products, managing higher levels of underwriting authority and resolving client issues while offering critical business advice to clients' key decision-makers. You will increase your role in developing others and will be counted on to coach and mentor staff.
Senior underwriters typically have three to five years of professional work experience.
- Team Leader, Senior Underwriter/Senior Underwriting Specialist (Account Executive Officer): As a team lead, senior underwriter, you are perceived as a leader by your colleagues and have distinguished yourself as a key player in the local market as an industry or product specialist. You have strong credentials and are a knowledgeable practitioner with a solid track record of performance excellence and a strong client focus.
In addition, you have developed and executed a sales and marketing plan for a specific territory with a dedicated client portfolio. You will take on similar responsibilities as managers who are directly responsible for relationships, services to clients and administration, while continuing to grow the business. You also will play a key role in developing people and recruiting and retaining staff.
