Travelers Canada is currently hiring for an Assistant Vice President, Commercial Accounts who will report to the Chief Underwriting Officer, Business Insurance in our Toronto office. He or she will be responsible for the development of superior insurance products and services as well as high quality underwriting and pricing guidelines for commercial accounts in Canada.  He or she will be responsible for managing the performance and profitability of the commercial accounts segment in Canada. He or she will be responsible for the training and direction of underwriting activities for commercial accounts underwriters across Canada, to ensure that productions and underwriting objectives with respect to profitability are achieved.

Job Specifications:

  • Develop and execute a well-defined underwriting strategy that is designed to increase the business unit’s presence in the market; retain the appropriate mix of business; and achieve overall growth and profit objectives.
  • Develop underwriting risk appetite and rules as well as underwriting and pricing guidelines for commercial accounts segment in Canada.
  • Develop products/services tailored to commercial accounts in the Canadian marketplace.
  • Direct all marketing and underwriting activities of commercial account underwriters to ensure that productions and underwriting objectives with respect to profitability are achieved.
  • Represent the company and underwriting strategy in various location(s) while working with other business units as appropriate to support market presentation objectives and seek out cross sell opportunities as appropriate.
  • Identify market opportunities within assigned brokers.
  • Provide broker staff training on topics such as commercial risk appetite and Travelers commercial products.
  • Viewed as an expert in multi-line underwriting, with emphasis on property and general liability.
  • Provide training to commercial account underwriters in Canada on products, services, underwriting and pricing guidelines.
  • Review underwriting analysis on more complex risks referred by underwriters with lower authority and provide recommendations.
  • Delegate authority to commercial account underwriters in Canada  to achieve a book of high quality profitable business.
  • Conduct quality reviews through analysis of management reports and underwriting audits to evaluate book performance and profitability and make recommendations as needed.
  • Monitor competitor products and sharing information with the business unit.

Job Qualifications:

  • A university degree with seven (7) or more years related underwriting experience, including commercial marketing and sales experience or equivalent combination of education/training and experience.
  • Strong technical skills in underwriting and coverage analysis.
  • Maintain and develop external contacts in the community through membership in professional associations and attendance at seminars and conferences.
  • Underwriting experience in the commercial accounts industry is preferred.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional development.
  • Proven ability to effectively market and sell products, build relationships, communicate, budget and present to groups.
  • Working knowledge of the broker distribution system and strong PC skills.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, presentation, organization, negotiation skills.
  • Strategic thinker, ability to articulate the big picture.
  • Strong attention to detail, and accuracy couple with excellent leadership, client relationships, analytical, negotiation, problem solving, influencing, documentation and organizational change.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Exceptional time and project management skills.
