TRAVELERS is hiring an Actuarial Analyst within our Actuarial Department in Toronto.  He or she will report to the Manager, Actuarial Research & Development within our Central Region department. He or she will apply actuarial, financial, and other problem-solving skills to achieve profitability and stability objectives of the Canadian Business Unit of Travelers. 

The Actuarial Analyst, depending upon the area of assignment, may assist in the development of rates, rating plans, individual and large account pricing strategies, reinsurance treaties, planning, forecasting and interpretation of underwriting results, determining appropriate IBNR reserve levels, financial modeling. Responsible for routine projects with predictable timing needs and providing functional support as assigned. This entry-level position requires direct supervision. May be required to work and/or communicate with non-actuarial staff.

Job Specifications:

  • Assists in the design of new rating algorithms and benchmarks and prepare dislocation analysis of the book affected under the guidance of the Manager, Actuarial Research and Development
  • Overhaul the large account pricing model (example to reflect new changes regarding catastrophe pricing) as needed
  • Creates or revise existing actuarial models to reflect dramatic changes in the regulatory or business environment which may include but is not limited to DCAT and ERM model changes
  • Determine situations of predictive modeling if applicable 
  • Responsible for gathering analysis and/or information on new lines of business if required
  • Support requests from the International Actuarial department, including ad-hoc analyses and testing of new tools.

Job Qualifications:

  • Completion of a postsecondary degree (University or College) with a business discipline specialization in actuarial science, mathematics, finance, accounting or economics
  • Successful completion of a minimum of 3 parts and the course work for the 3 VEE courses of the Casualty Actuarial Society Exam Syllabus
  • Minimum 1 year working experience in actuarial, insurance, financial industries, excluding co-op placements
  • Basic knowledge of pricing, reserving and finance
  • Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office. Good working knowledge of Excel is essential
  • Strong analytical, problem solving skills including innovation and unconventional approaches
  • Basic project and time management skills
  • Ability to work and build relationships with internal and external customers
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex subjects simply and effectively
  • Highly motivated to meet requirements of position and to provide quality services
