TRAVELERS of Canada is looking for an Actuarial Analyst. He or she will report to the Manager, Corporate Actuarial Services within the Actuarial Services department. He or she will apply actuarial, financial, and other problem-solving skills to achieve the profitability and stability objectives of the Canadian Business Unit of Travelers. This business unit focuses on commercial insurance of niche markets.
The Actuarial Analyst, depending upon the area of assignment, may assist in reinsurance treaties, planning, determining appropriate IBNR reserve levels, and financial modeling. Responsible for routine projects with predictable timing needs and providing functional support as assigned. This entry-level position requires direct supervision. May be required to work and/or communicate with non-actuarial staff.
Job Accountabilities:
- Provide management and underwriters with Reports/Tools to clearly monitor the results of the company in key performance areas which may include assisting in updating and enhancing Profitability Reports, Broker Reports, Renewal and New Business Activity Reports and Industry comparative Reports on a quarterly and/or monthly basis
- Provide support for a realistic Operational Results Plan and Mid-Year Forecast which may include assisting in creating of a Planning Template to underwriting leaders for Premium and Commissions, assisting in projecting loss ratios, reinsurance costs and premium & loss patterns for planned years.
- Provide support for the development and implementation of the Reinsurance placement strategy, including; gathering information for reinsurance submission of our Canadian Treaties with our broker and of our Global Treaties with our US Reinsurance Department, updating the final reinsurance cost allocation calculations.
- Provide support for loss Reserving analysis on a monthly/quarterly basis to evaluate the adequacy of the loss reserves reported in financial statements
- Assists the appointed actuary in preparing the Canadian Appointed Actuary's Report for inclusion in the Annual Statement (for St. Paul Fire and Marine and Travelers Guarantee)
- Assists the appointed actuary in preparing the Canadian Dynamic Capital Adequacy Testing (DCAT) Report for regulators and management (for St. Paul Fire and Marine and Travelers Guarantee)
Job Specifications:
- Working towards completing a postsecondary degree (University or College) with a business discipline specialization in actuarial science, mathematics, finance, accounting or economics
- Successful completion of a minimum of 1 part and any applicable course work for the VEE courses of the Casualty Actuarial Society Exam Syllabus as pertaining to their school term
- Working experience in actuarial, insurance, financial industries is an asset
- Basic knowledge of actuarial science and insurance. Basic knowledge of pricing, reserving and finance is an asset
- Basic ability to read and comprehend financial statements
- Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office. Good working knowledge of Excel is essential
- Strong analytical, problem solving skills including innovation and unconventional approaches
- Basic project and time management skills
- Ability to work and build relationships with internal and external customers
- Excellent communication and interpersonal
