TRAVELERS is hiring for a Director, Actuarial Business Services within our Actuarial Department in Toronto. He or she will report to the Assistant Vice President, Actuarial Services who is the Executive responsible for the department. He or she will apply actuarial, financial, and other problem-solving skills to achieve profitability and stability objectives of the Canadian Business unit of Travelers. This role will lead Actuarial Business Services for the Canadian Business Unit to achieve the profitability and stability objectives of the companies.
The Director, Actuarial Business Services will be responsible for leading the underwriting support of our business through large account pricing, planning, reinsurance submission input, enhanced performance measures, detailed profitability analyses and strong collaboration with the three other local Actuarial Directors plus International colleagues to ensure consistency within Canada and International Operations. Outstanding communication and presentation skills will be required for this role. This senior position manages the Manager, Business Actuarial.
Job Specifications:
- Provides senior management and underwriters with Reports to clearly monitor the results of the company in key performance areas including; Profitability Analysis, Monthly Operating Review Meetings, Loss Ratio Rollforward, Production Highlights, Renewal and New Business, Quote and Hit
- Leads quarterly discussion with management and underwriters to support enhanced Performance Measures
- Provides underwriters with adequate and profitable Pricing guidelines including pro-active management of upcoming renewals, development and maintenance of a schedule and indicated premiums for individual accounts over $200,000
- Maintains large account and fleet rating pricing tool, automated Rating Manual for each line of business and coverage, reviews the Rate Matrix and supports the pricing of large Risk Solution accounts
- Leads annual detailed discussions with Underwriters facilitating initial plan premiums inputs
- Liaise with Corporate Actuarial on the loss ratio projections and revise as necessary to reflect any changes in environment as discussed with Underwriting (i.e. rate changes trend, economic expectations, risk control initiatives, etc)
- Review iterations of the results coming out of the planning model for reasonableness
- Assists in the final review of information gathered for reinsurance submissions for input before external release
- Collaborates with International Actuarial to ensure consistency where appropriate and where efficiency gains can be made to Large account pricing tool, Enhanced Performance Measures, Profitability Analyses and CURE
- Contributes to the development and execution of departmental plans and budget.
- Manages work assignments, constructs an individual development plans and prepares initial compensation recommendations on a yearly basis for Manager, Corporate Actuarial.
- Manage the overall leadership of the supporting team in dealing with strategic planning, operational and technical issues.
- Responsible for maintaining and enhancing the working environment that fosters a strong team, open communication and exceptional performance.
- Foster and maintain professional relationships with business partners including other areas of Actuarial Services, Corporate Finance, Underwriting and Corporate Headquarters.
- Undertake appropriate professional development to develop and maintain skills and satisfy requirements of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and/or American Academy of Actuaries.
Job Qualifications:
- Completion of a postsecondary degree (University or College) with specialization in actuarial science, mathematics, finance, accounting or economics
- Successful completion of a minimum of the ACAS designation
- A minimum of seven (7) years of actuarial or related experience, including at least three (3) years of pricing work experience.
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office. Excellent working knowledge of Excel is essential
- Strong analytical, problem solving skills including innovation and unconventional approaches
- Strong project and time management skills
- Ability to work and build relationships with internal and external customers
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex subjects simply and effectively
- Highly motivated to meet requirements of position and to provide quality services
