TRAVELERS is hiring a Manager, Actuarial Research and Development within our Actuarial Department in Toronto. He or she will report to the Director, Actuarial Research and Development. He or she will apply actuarial, financial, and other problem-solving skills to achieve profitability and stability objectives of the Canadian Business Unit of Travelers.
The Manager, Actuarial Research and Development will assist the Director, Actuarial Research and Development in revising large account pricing tools, revisions and development of tools to assist in monitoring our exposure to risk and determining new rating algorithms and benchmarks for Business Insurance, Financial Protection Services, and Bond. This position manages one actuarial analyst.
Job Specifications:
- Responsible for assisting and managing the Actuarial Research and Development department
- Works closely with local underwriters to determine the current approach to rating including the strengths and challenges to ensure their requirements are adequately met
- Work closely with subject matter experts from Corporate Headquarters and Internationally where appropriate in rate development
- Assist in the design of new rating algorithms and benchmarks and prepare dislocation analysis of the book affected in order to understand and mitigate the impact if desired for Business Insurance and Financial Protection Services
- Assesses current Bond rate supports in place and adapts as necessary
- Work closely with Actuarial Data and Analytics on rate specifications and training
- Create or revise existing actuarial models to reflect dramatic changes in the regulatory or business environment which may include but is not limited to DCAT and ERM model changes
- Overhaul of the large account pricing model (example to reflect new changes regarding catastrophe pricing) as needed
- Predictive Modeling and entry into new lines of business if applicable
- Oversees and/or participates in key/complex actuarial projects, including cross-company actuarial initiatives.
- Present projects to peers and management.
- Assists with leadership of the supporting team in dealing with strategic planning, operational and technical issues.
- Manages work assignments, constructs an individual development plans and prepares initial compensation recommendations on a yearly basis for Analyst, Actuarial Research and Development.
- Responsible for maintaining and enhancing the working environment that fosters a strong team, open communication and exceptional performance.
- Foster and maintain professional relationships with business partners including other areas of Actuarial Services, Underwriting, Information Technology and Corporate Headquarters
- Collaborate and build network with peers globally to ensure consistency where appropriate and where efficiency gains can be made
Job Qualifications:
- Completion of a postsecondary degree (University or College) with specialization in actuarial science, mathematics, finance, accounting or economics
- Successful completion of a minimum of 5 parts of the Casualty Actuarial Society Exam Syllabus
- A minimum of five (5) years of actuarial or related experience.
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Ability to successfully work with teams
- Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office. Excellent working knowledge of Excel is essential
- Strong analytical, problem solving skills including innovation and unconventional approaches
- Strong project and time management skills
- Ability to work and build relationships with internal and external customers
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex subjects simply and effectively
- Highly motivated to meet requirements of position and to provide quality services
