Travelers Guarantee Company of Canada is hiring for a senior underwriter, Surety reporting to the assistant vice president, Contract Surety in the Toronto office. This position will focus on producing and underwriting new and renewal business from assigned brokers. They will consistently achieve budgeted financial results (premium, loss ratio, retention, commissions, pricing, new business and premium collection) through execution of market segment strategies. In addition, he or she will interact and collaborate with a team of colleagues and other critical internal/external business associates. This position involves both outside and inside sales and includes direct responsibility for business development and the management of a book of business.
Job Specifications:
- Develop and leverage productive brokerage/client relationships through a high level of visibility with brokers and clients and a disciplined sales management approach (i.e., planning and follow-up for agent/broker and prospective end customer visits/meetings) in support of business objectives
- Effectively develop and execute sales plans.; sales activity should include some of the larger and more important brokerages/clients
- Act as a business partner with assigned brokers and clients including interaction and negotiation as appropriate and continuously manage book of business (maintain quality of business required by market strategy)
- Assess risk while making appropriate decisions within own underwriting authority and make appropriate recommendations to management
- Underwrite more complex accounts and consider different approaches toward risks to maximize profitability (e.g., pricing, retention, limits, indemnity and security)
- Within authority limits, make quick sound decisions and negotiate terms and conditions consistent with Travelers established standards
- Demonstrates a sense-of-urgency in prioritizing tasks and responds to brokers and other industry personnel in a clear and concise manner, demonstrating a high quality of customer service
- Understand and execute market strategies to produce budgeted results
- Accountable for accurate underwriting documentation/ information in account management systems and adherence to documentation standards
- Understand, embrace, execute, and foster Travelers bond guiding principles/best practices
- Convince/persuade internal and external clients to help achieve underwriting, sales and production goals pursuant to strategic objectives
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external clients.
- Actively participates as a mentor for Junior Underwriters, through discussion of underwriting issues, and various training and development initiatives with other team members
- Participate on projects having an impact on the business.
- Completion of the ACSB (Associate in Canadian Surety Bonding) designation through the University of Toronto is strongly encouraged
Job Qualifications:
- Completion of a bachelor's degree with a business discipline specialization in finance, accounting or economics or those pursuing a designation such as a CGA or CMA will be considered
- Prior work experience with a bank in commercial credit analysis would be an asset as would be experience with a surety company
- Demonstrates strong sales management skills and advanced analytical and financial analysis abilities
- Strong problem solving and decision making skills
- Ability to think strategically, understand a situation (accounts, competitive environment, product changes) and develop a strategy to achieve the desired outcome.
- Ability to listen, influence and negotiate is essential to effectively develop productive internal and external relationships
- Promote the growth and development of less experienced staff members and foster an energized environment
- Act as a technical resource to newer or less experienced employees and external clients
- Exceptional in building relationships with internal and external clients in support of business objectives
- Participates in industry functions to increase visibility in the marketplace, network with key players in the industry and increase knowledge of the industry
- Highly motivated to meet requirements of position
- Demonstrates leadership characteristics and traits by taking ownership and responsibility for decisions and outcomes, meets deadlines, demonstrates integrity and initiative
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office
- Some travel required
