TRAVELERS is hiring for an Underwriting Specialist, Financial Professional Services in our Western Region.  He or she will report to the Manager, FPS Western Canada region.  He or she will primarily be responsible for underwriting and developing a book of Corporate Management Liability and Professional Liability business, along with underwriting other Financial and Professional Services insurance products.

Job Specifications:

  • Underwrite an assigned portfolio of business and deliver annual portfolio growth targets within Western Canada.
  • Responsible for identifying and soliciting new business opportunities on both account specific and industry basis.
  • Strong understanding of D&O, Crime, and Professional Liability risk selection, pricing, coverage analysis, exposure analysis and financial assessment
  • Be familiar with standard and non-standard rating processes, and have the ability to clearly communicate underwriting recommendations that take into account our underwriting strategies and the unique exposures of each risk
  • Negotiate & underwrite key account renewals and be able to effectively articulate key competitive advantages.
  • Analyze all submitted information and determine need for any additional data based on the underwriting guidelines of FPS.
  • Be aware of the competitive advantages and/or disadvantages of Travelers’ wordings and/or underwriting philosophies. Be conscious of market conditions, advise management of new trends and be willing to adapt to changes.
  • Identify problems early, and be able to recommend a course of action to address any such concerns.
  • Keep current on technical knowledge and offer technical support where possible.
  • Contribute to a strong team working environment that fosters open communication and exceptional performance

Job Qualifications:

  • A university degree and a minimum of 3 - 5 years experience in underwriting or equivalent insurance industry experience
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of D&O/Professional Liability/Crime risk selection, coverage, pricing, exposure analysis, and financial assessment
  • Working knowledge of the brokerage distribution system, manual and automated rating systems, policy forms and procedure
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, marketing, and negotiation skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Strong customer service skills are required to develop/maintain productive client relationships in support of business objectives
  • Ability to listen, influence and negotiate is essential to effectively develop productive internal and external relationships
  • Exceptional in building relationships with internal and external customers
  • Demonstrates an intrinsic ability to apply “book knowledge” to actual underwriting cases
  • Attend industry functions through a designated territory (some travel required)
  • Highly motivated to meet requirements of position
  • Demonstrates leadership characteristics and traits by taking ownership and responsibility for decisions and outcomes, meets deadlines, demonstrates integrity and initiative
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office
  • Some travel may be required
