Hartford is known as “New England's Rising Star,” and is full of things to do! Many of our Hartford campus employees not only work here, but also spend their free time enjoying what the city has to offer.
Restaurants
Downtown Hartford is full of places to gather and eat every day of the week. If you're looking for a nice, casual dinner, head to City Steam, a brew house featuring burgers and their own brewed beer. After dinner, there is a great comedy club in the basement of the restaurant where you can see some of the best stand-up comedians in New England. Black Eyed Sally's is great for outstanding Cajun food and live blues shows.
If you're feeling thrifty, you can invite a few friends to Vito's By The Park for their free happy hour gourmet pizza. When an extra touch of class is required, the destination is Max's Downtown where the atmosphere is dressy and the food is elegant. There are several ethnic restaurants on Franklin Avenue in the Southend of the city.
Nightlife
If you know you want to go clubbing, Club Blu can't be beat! Dance to the latest house and techno music there, or wander to The Brickyard for great live local bands and Top 40 hits. A weekend night would not be complete without playing darts at the “Cheers” style McKinnon's Tavern or shooting pool at Pig's Eye Pub, which attracts a large crowd of college students from local universities.
Sporting Events
Sporting events are always a good time when with friends. The city is home to UConn football and basketball. During fall, you'll see many people at Rentschler Field – tailgating before (and after!) the big game.
Throughout winter and spring, UConn basketball reigns supreme. Although tickets are nearly impossible to get due to the large number of fans, Hartford boasts the next best thing to being at the game – Coach's. Coach's, a restaurant owned by UConn coach Jim Calhoun, is absolutely the place to be (other than the Hartford Civic Center or Gampel Pavilion) on game night. Many show up right after work in order to get a seat in the restaurant. By 6 p.m. – about an hour from game time – the place is packed!
Museums, Theaters and Parks
Hartford is also home to the arts. On a nice summer day it's fun to walk over to the nation's oldest public art museum, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. As Travelers employees, we enjoy free admission!
The city also offers Broadway plays at the Bushnell Theaters and professional theater at Hartford Stage Company and Theaterworks. There are many historical homes such as the home of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe.
A walk through Bushnell Park is also a great way to spend an afternoon. In the park, you'll view an antique carousel, fountains, and the State Capitol. Monday nights in the city is free live jazz. Or pack a picnic and head to the Westend to Elizabeth Park to see the nation's oldest municipal rose garden. Take in a free outdoor concert there, too.
