In the second annual Best Places to Launch a Career survey conducted by BusinessWeek, Travelers ranked number 37, the highest of all property casualty companies that appear on the list.
“We’re honored to be recognized as a great company to start a career,” says John Clifford, executive vice president, human resources. “In today’s job market, competition is stiff among employers to attract entry-level employees. In order to attract the best talent, we have to be in-synch with what young professionals are looking for in a company.”
Like other companies that participated in the survey, Travelers has increased its efforts to appeal to younger candidates, most recently through our careers Web site. The site includes a wide range of enhancements aimed at entry-level candidates, such as resume preparation, tips on interviewing and information on transitioning from school to work. The site also includes an interactive major match up tool to help students and new grads find opportunities that best fit their educational background.
Travelers also offers entry-level employees the opportunity to participate in one of five Leadership Development Programs. These programs allow participants to rotate every six to nine months through several areas within a department they designate as a field of interest, such as financial management or information technology. Participants learn by doing and, at the conclusion of their rotational assignments, they have a better idea of the opportunities available to them throughout the company.
The BusinessWeek ranking is based on extensive surveys given to universities, students and employers. Respondents are asked to comment on hiring practices, pay scales, benefits and overall work environment.
