Life at Travelers

Community Involvement

Committed to long-term investments in people and programs in the communities where we do business

As a strong, vital company, we depend on strong vital communities. For more than 150 years, Travelers has been committed to the communities where we do business. By supporting nonprofit organizations and their work serving others, Travelers ensures that the threads of our communities’ social fabric have both strength and resilience. Our community support includes charitable grants, employee volunteerism, leadership and civic contributions.

Charitable Grants

The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TRV) and its two private foundations, Travelers Foundation and Travelers Connecticut Foundation, awarded $17 million to charitable organizations nationwide in fiscal year 2007. Our giving is focused on education, community development, and arts and culture – areas where Travelers has helped create opportunities for people to succeed and build economically stable communities.

  • Education – According to the U.S. Department of Labor, nine out of 10 of the fastest growing U.S. jobs require some level of post-secondary education. At the same time, there is a growing population of students who are less likely to graduate from high school or to pursue further education. To help build the workforce of tomorrow, Travelers contributed more than $4 million in 2007 grants to support the success of low-income, first-generation students in post-secondary education.
  • Community Development – Building and preserving family assets and earning power in low-income communities is another focal point of Travelers giving. Homes and small businesses represent important assets in our communities that build family wealth, create jobs and provide earning power. The company provided $4.8 million in support to organizations that empower individuals from urban, low-income and underserved areas to become self-sufficient, productive members of the community.
  • Arts and Culture – More than $2.7 million in arts and culture grants from Travelers helped preserve cultural heritage and reflect our diverse communities. Supporting diverse arts and cultural organizations that stimulate creativity, help us understand one another, preserve cultural heritage and contribute directly to enhance academic learning and access for low-income and underserved communities.

Employee Volunteerism and Community Leadership

Travelers’ employees have been involved in the communities we serve for decades.  From service on nonprofit boards and committees to work on Habitat for Humanity homes, from school tutoring to local food shelf assistance, we understand it takes a unique combination of investing in both business and in our communities to make us successful.  Some examples of our employee commitment include:

  • More than 85 Travelers employees in Saint Paul serve on nonprofit boards of directors.
  • More than 70 employees participate in a “Lunchtime Volunteer Reading Program.”
  • More than 350 employees have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.
  • Each year, our employees participate in a Paint-a-thon project, volunteering their time to paint houses for seniors in need.
  • Travelers and its employees contributed more than $2.6 million to local United Way organizations and other nonprofits through company-sponsored charitable fund drives.
  • Employee involvement in the community is supported and encouraged through Travelers’ Matching Funds programs.  The Matching Gifts of Money program gives employees the opportunity to apply for up to $500 in company matches to eligible nonprofit organizations.  The Matching Gifts of Time program allows employees to apply for a $500 grant, when they’ve given a day (24 hours in a calendar year) to a nonprofit, charitable organization. Last year, the company alone gave more than $150,000 through this program.
  • Employee committees make funding decisions and help create strategies for addressing local issues.

Civic Contributions

Travelers supports local government, civic and nonprofit organizations in Saint Paul, Minn., and Hartford, Conn., through corporate contributions for downtown development, special event sponsorships, public safety initiatives and disaster relief efforts.
