How My Internship Led To Full-time Employment

Ryan
Account Executive
Charlotte, N.C.

I started with Travelers in September of 2004 as a Temp with Boiler & Machinery in Hartford, Conn. I exceeded their expectations and was asked to come back the following summer as their intern. I continued to learn a great deal about the insurance industry and was intrigued by the business. I was invited to attend meetings and was even asked to provide input. The highlight of my internship came when I attended a sales convention in Boston, where I marketed our new Farm product to potential customers.

This experience showed me how all aspects of what is taught in the classroom come together in a real world business setting. Working on a mass marketing campaign was beneficial to my studies toward a concentration in marketing. I was able to interact with underwriters on a daily basis, a position that I didn’t even know existed before coming to Travelers. From them I learned a great deal about insurance, including different types of risk and how to assess and price for them.

I enjoyed Travelers so much, the people with whom I was working and the knowledge that I was gaining, that I worked part time throughout my senior year. By the time graduation rolled around, it seemed only natural to stay with the company and become an underwriter. With the encouragement and support of everyone in Boiler & Machinery, I applied to and was accepted by the 2007 Underwriting Development Program.

I am currently an Account Executive in Charlotte, N.C. with Commercial Accounts. I use many of the skills that I learned in my internship while calling on agents or discussing new business applications with fellow underwriters. The knowledge and training that I received during my internship has opened a new world of opportunity to me.
