Auto Insurance Coverage: Comprehensive
When we talk about Comprehensive coverage, we aren't just talking about our reputation for wide-ranging assistance if you find yourself in an accident. We're talking about a specific type of insurance that provides coverage for most types of damage to your car, as a result of an accident other than a collision.
Typical scenarios where Comprehensive coverage applies include: breakage of glass, falling objects, fire, theft, windstorm, hail, water, flood, malicious mischief, vandalism, or impact with an animal. The maximum amount paid under Comprehensive coverage is the actual cash value of your vehicle minus the deductible you chose for this coverage. Keep this in mind when receiving online.
Getting Comprehensive Coverage
If you want to protect your vehicle, then you should consider Comprehensive insurance. Comprehensive insurance covers your vehicle for perils other than collision. To protect yourself in the event of a collision, you should consider Collision insurance. If you purchase both Comprehensive coverage and Collision coverage, you will be covering many types of damage to your car.
If you have a loan or a lease on your vehicle, then you are generally required to purchase Comprehensive insurance. If your vehicle is fully paid for, this insurance is typically optional.
A Detailed Look at Your Deductible
You will need to choose a deductible for your Comprehensive coverage. This is the amount that you agree to pay out of pocket in the event that you have a claim for Comprehensive coverage.
Choosing a higher deductible can help you lower the cost of your insurance. However, since you can't anticipate an accident, you should make sure to choose a deductible that you can afford to pay at any time.
The Rules of Comprehensive Coverage
You must have Liability coverage in order to purchase Comprehensive coverage.
Coverages and limits may vary by state. Check with a Travelers representative to find out what's available in your state, or get your auto insurance quotes online.
Situations where damage is not covered. Please be aware that Comprehensive coverage does not cover damages due to normal wear and tear, such as mechanical or electrical breakdowns or flat tires.
An Example of Comprehensive Coverage:
You leave your house one morning and realize that your hybrid vehicle has been stolen. Because the loss was due to an incident other than a collision, your Comprehensive coverage would help you.
If you chose a $500 deductible, you would pay the first $500 out of pocket to replace your vehicle. Your Comprehensive coverage would then pay the rest, up to the actual cash value of your stolen vehicle.
