Our Company is one of the country's leading insurance providers. We have a responsibility to advocate responsible solutions to issues facing our business and the communities we serve. The policy outlined below demonstrates Travelers' high level of commitment to exercising fairness, equity and underwriting discipline. Employees and agency representatives must abide by this policy in all of their dealings with existing and prospective customers.
The Travelers policy is:
- We do not redline in the selection, retention, and pricing of our business. Redlining is the practice of refusing to insure, refusing to renew, canceling, charging a different rate, or limiting the amount or type of coverage based on the location of a risk in an urban or minority neighborhood. Further, it involves risk selection criteria not based on sound underwriting and actuarial principles reasonably related to actual or anticipated loss experience of the risk or a group of risks with similar characteristics.
- Specifically with regard to homeowners and other types of property insurance, we underwrite based on current condition and at a price that is actuarially sound. We do not refuse coverage or limit the amount or type of coverage on property based on its age, market value, market value/replacement cost relationship or its location in an urban or minority neighborhood.
- We do not consider in any fashion the race, sex, or ethnicity of a property owner or the demographic characteristics of the surrounding neighborhood in determining whether to insure homes or other types of buildings. Nor do we use such information to decide the amount or type of coverage we will provide, or the premium we will charge.
- We provide fair, courteous, and impartial service to all policyholders and treat all requests for an and insurance coverage equally, in accordance with our lawful underwriting rules and guidelines.
In addition to our non-discrimination policy, Travelers is committed to a proactive approach concerning the availability of insurance in urban areas. Consistent with our business objectives, we are continually interested in expanding our urban business. We have undertaken substantial efforts to develop and appoint agents in urban areas to serve those markets. We have also taken steps to support minority agency development programs, including the Independent Insurance Agents of America's ("IIAA") Multicultural Forums. These programs help address urban availability while increasing the diversification of our agent force. We have promoted home ownership and access to homeowners insurance through partnerships and working relationships with community and housing organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity and Neighborhood Housing Services, in various cities throughout the country. In addition, together with the National Insurance Task Force (NITF), we endorse consumer education and loss prevention programs that have improved the insurance climate in urban areas.
Travelers and its independent agents have given generous contributions of time and money to various educational and community initiatives in urban areas designed to promote home ownership and availability and understanding of insurance. To those independent agents who have joined us in these efforts, we express our thanks and our hope that you continue.
Through your continued commitment to and compliance with our policies and programs, you are acting in a manner faithful to the law and enhancing the Company's image, profits and goodwill, as well as your own. Should there be any questions about Travelers urban activities or any doubt as to any business issue, please contact your local Regional Vice President, sales manager, account executive, or Don Davis, Director of Urban Markets (630-427-1793). Reports of any failure to comply with this policy should be made to Glenn McNamara, General Counsel, Personal Lines (860-954-5532) or John Nealon, General Counsel, Commercial Lines (860-954-7531).
