Leadership Development Program

The goal of the Financial Management Leadership Development Program (FMLDP) is to attract and develop individuals who are highly skilled in finance or accounting and are motivated to become future leaders of the organization.

The FMLDP has been preparing future leaders for nearly 30 years. Program graduates hold leadership roles in our business segments and corporate support organizations including positions as chief financial officers, finance directors and business unit presidents.

FMLDP participants have certain traits in common. These traits include a strong technical foundation in accounting or finance, strong communication skills and leadership abilities. Drive, motivation to succeed and the desire to make a difference are also readily apparent.

Rotational opportunities

Program participants experience three one-year rotational positions. The FMLDP offers a diverse set of assignments throughout our organization, which currently has more than 1,000 finance and accounting positions. Most rotations are in business units where our participants gain a comprehensive understanding of what drives the numbers.

  • CEO/CFO executive support

Mentoring

We believe it is critical to learn from other successful business leaders. We employ a structured mentoring program in which our participants are paired with executive mentors and are expected to meet regularly to further facilitate career development.

Corporate culture and senior management support

Our senior management has a clear vision of the future and is committed to developing tomorrow’s leaders. Senior management actively participates in many facets of our program and related activities.

Training and development

Our required course work includes technical training on topics such as Principles of Insurance, Insurance Accounting, Actuarial Principles, Enterprise Controls & Risk Management, Reinsurance and Corporate Strategy. In addition to theory, our course work includes industry- and Travelers-specific information.

Leadership workshops include Emotional Intelligence, Presentation Delivery Skills, Business Writing, Leading Teams, Managing Conflict, Organizational Collaboration and Project Management, to name a few. We also regularly have speaker forums during which business leaders provide updates on industry trends and company initiatives.

Program participants prepare individual development plans each year, which are used to facilitate career growth. In addition, each participant receives two formal performance appraisals annually.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree with a preferred GPA of 3.2 or greater, and successful completion of at least two accounting courses
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Initiative and active contributor with activities
  • Motivation to succeed and seeking a long-term career opportunity
  • Related work experience, including internships, is preferred
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States

Locations

First-year positions are available in Hartford, Conn., and Saint Paul, Minn. Field and international opportunities are available after one year in the program.

Summer internships

Nearly all of our undergraduate full-time hires have previously interned with Travelers. Our robust summer internship program provides an excellent opportunity to gain industry knowledge at the only insurance company recognized as a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Interns develop technical skills and business acumen through challenging assignments that provide the opportunity to positively impact our company.
