Technical Development Program

The Technical Development Program is designed to prepare highly-motivated college graduates for a technology career at Travelers. The program can be tailored to emphasize software development, systems analysis, business intelligence, operations or a combination of functional technology areas.

The program focuses on developing participants’ strengths and interests by offering a curriculum that includes training in cutting-edge technologies, insurance and leadership, along with supporting on-the-job assignments.

Program Components

The Technical Development Program builds a number of job competencies, including:

  • Business knowledge and partnership: Collaboration and communication with team members and business partners.
  • Leadership: Initiative and accountability.
  • Planning: Organizational and time-management skills.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making: Recognition and analysis of problems and development of timely, practical and cost-effective solutions.
  • Team orientation: Relationships with peers to achieve objectives, while putting the success of the team above their own interests.
  • Technical knowledge: Competency in a variety of technologies and technical roles.

Rotational Opportunities

The Technical Development Program is a multi-year program with a series of rotations that increase in complexity in technology and business, depending on prior work experience. A typical rotation is nine to 12 months in length.

Training and Development

Program participants take part in a framework for career development which provides the information and support necessary to build their technical, business and leadership skills quickly. Participants also engage in mentoring, networking and career guidance activities.


Qualified candidates should be se self-starting, energetic and creative individuals interested in beginning their IT career in a challenging and fast-paced environment that offers opportunities for growth and personal success.

Additional program requirements include:

  • Passion for technology and business
  • Preferred GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • Prior internship or work experience
  • Motivation to succeed
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and analytical skills
  • Extracurricular involvement
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States

Suggested Majors

  • Computer or Electrical Engineering
  • Computer Science 
  • Information Technology
  • Management Information Systems
  • Mathematics with a minor in Information Technology
  • A minor in business administration is a plus


Positions are available in Hartford, Connecticut, and St. Paul, Minnesota.
