Title: Field Investigator
Years at Travelers: 1
Military Branch: U.S. Air Force
As a field investigator in Travelers’ Special Investigative Unit, I conduct investigations to detect fraud on claims against the company, providing investigative expertise to limit exposure and protect company assets. I work closely with local, state and federal law enforcement to pursue the perpetrators of insurance fraud. I also help train claim associates on identifying fraud.
I enjoy this position because I am part of a team doing their best to detect, deter and defeat insurance fraud. Plus, this position provides the opportunity for me to solve puzzles, pursue a lead until I reach a guaranteed dead end and use the skills I gained as a criminal investigator in the United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations.
Because of the nature of my job, I usually don’t work a typical 9 to 5 day. My day typically starts with a database search to obtain background information on claimants and witnesses. I can access certain personal information and identify Social Security numbers, aliases, driver’s license numbers, addresses, phone numbers, criminal records and past claims histories to establish whether someone has ever attempted insurance fraud. Then I may visit claimants and witnesses to obtain a recorded statement, take photographs and inspect facilities to gather evidence and determine its value.
Once the investigation is complete, I provide a detailed investigative report to the claim handler for action. Some days, I will spend all day in the office, searching databases, making telephone calls and writing reports. Other times, I attend or conduct training in regards to the “red flags” that may pop up when someone is committing insurance fraud. I often work irregular hours because of the need to contact people who are not available during the normal workday.
The severity of the cases I work on can vary greatly, from claimants simply overstating the damage to a vehicle to complicated fraud rings responsible for many claimants and supported by dishonest doctors, lawyers and even insurance personnel.
Life at Travelers is rewarding. Travelers is one of the largest providers of property and casualty insurance products in the United States, and I love working here. There is so much to learn and there is a great deal of opportunity for career enhancement. And Travelers really understands the need and the importance of good claims handling as it relates to suspected fraud. I respect that the company has such a focus on detecting, deterring and defeating insurance fraud.
