When a senior specialist communications position opened at Travelers in 1993, I heard from several people that this was the perfect job for me. When I was offered the position, I accepted because it was a great opportunity for me to build a program from scratch and take on more responsibility.
Why have I stayed at the company for 15 years? Because I’ve had many opportunities to take on challenging assignments while working with incredibly bright people who like to work hard. I’ve been able to work my way from a senior communications specialist role to vice president. Along the way, I feel like I’ve done almost everything there is to do in communications – from working on internal company newsletters to being a company spokesperson to writing speeches for executives.
In my current role, I am responsible for internal communications to employees and agents, the company intranet and internet, and executive communications. My position presents me with unique challenges every day – no one day is ever the same. I’ll come to the office thinking I’m going to work on A, B and C and then immediately have to start working on D, E and F. I’m always interacting with different areas of the company, trying to digest complex subjects and make them understandable to a broad audience.
I came to this company because I thought it was a great place to work. And I still feel that way. I enjoy what I do because I have the chance to solve problems. I have opportunities to do this each day, which is really satisfying to me. Even though this company has more than 30,000 employees, I feel like I do make a difference.
