What is car insurance?
Car insurance is a contract between you and your insurance company – you get the coverage you need in exchange for making premium payments to the insurance company.
Why do I need car insurance?
If your car is stolen or if you’re in an accident, you may incur expenses for car repairs, property damage, medical bills, a rental car and more. Insurance can help cover those costs. In addition, most states require drivers who own a vehicle to have car insurance – though mandatory minimum coverage and policy limits vary.
How much does auto insurance cost?
The cost of auto insurance policies can vary based on a number of factors that insurance companies consider when calculating your premium. These can include your selected coverage limits and deductibles, along with other personal and vehicle-related considerations. Higher coverage limits typically result in higher premiums but can provide greater protection, while lower limits may reduce costs but increase your potential out-of-pocket expenses after an incident. Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when selecting coverage.

Find ways to save on car insurance
Knowing you have enough car insurance to cover potential losses can help provide peace of mind while also helping to ensure that you don’t pay more than necessary for your coverage. When pricing car insurance, keep in mind that you may be able to lower your costs if you qualify for various applicable auto insurance discounts. Increasing your deductible may help lower your premium costs, but it would lead to an increase in the amount you’d pay out of pocket in the event of a covered loss. Be sure to contact your independent agent or Travelers representative to talk through options.

What does car insurance cover and what are the different types of auto coverage?
Comparing car insurance quotes can help you identify the coverage that meets your needs. A key step is understanding common auto insurance coverage options along with terminology you’ll typically see in car insurance policies.
Explore auto coverage options
Here are some of the most common auto insurance coverage options:
Liability coverage
Most states require auto liability coverage, which can cover you for property damage to someone else’s vehicle or property and for bodily injury to others if you’re found responsible for an accident.
Collision coverage
Collision coverage can offer protection for your vehicle if you’re in an accident with another vehicle or object, or if your vehicle rolls over.
Comprehensive coverage
Comprehensive coverage can help cover damage to your vehicle that’s not caused by a collision – things like theft, fire, striking an animal or a tree falling on your car in a storm.
Loan or lease gap coverage
If you finance or lease your vehicle and it’s a total loss, loan or lease gap coverage can help you minimize out-of-pocket expenses by covering the difference between the current value of your vehicle and what’s owed on it.
Extended transportation expenses coverage
This coverage can be added to your car insurance policy to help pay for a rental car if your car is damaged in a covered accident. Extended transportation expenses coverage can also help cover the cost of public transportation (such as a bus or train) or a car service.
Learn about auto policy terminology
Here are some common terms you’ll typically see in car insurance policies:
Premium
The amount you agree to pay an insurance company in exchange for personal auto insurance coverage.
Deductible
The amount of a covered claim that you’ll be responsible to pay out of pocket. The lower the deductible, the less out-of-pocket expenses you’re responsible for if an incident occurs. If, for example, you choose a $500 deductible and have an accident causing $2,000 in damage to your vehicle, you’ll be responsible for the first $500 of a covered loss before insurance kicks in.
Limits
The amount your insurance will cover for damages incurred by a car accident. Coverage limits may vary by coverage type and by state.
