Common Scenarios
Damage to your home caused by a fallen tree due to a covered loss, such as wind or lightning, is generally covered.
Generally, if a tree damages your home or other covered structure, the removal of the tree will be covered. We may also cover the cost to remove trees that block driveways, ramps or other fixtures designed to assist a person in entering and leaving the dwelling in certain circumstances. The amount we will pay may be limited. Typically, there is no coverage to remove a tree that has not damaged property or blocked access; however, some policies have limited coverage available for tree debris removal.
Typically, there is no coverage to replace a fallen tree. Some policies include additional coverage for trees, shrubs and other plants, which may provide limited coverage for the replacement of a fallen tree depending on the cause of its loss.
Most, but not all, homeowners policies provide Additional Living Expense coverage. In order for this coverage to apply, there must have been a covered loss that caused damage to your home that makes it unfit to live in. If the coverage requirements are met, we pay for any necessary increase in living expenses incurred by you so that you can maintain your normal standard of living. The coverage is typically subject to a time and/or amount limit.
If your auto has been damaged by your fallen tree, you should consider filing a claim under your auto policy. Damage to your vehicle caused by your fallen tree is not covered by your homeowners policy.
If your neighbor claims you are responsible for the damage to their property, your policy may provide you with a legal defense and may pay for the damage.
