Should I File a Claim?
Whether or not to file a claim is always your decision. Here are some things to consider if you are an auto or property customer:
- Was anyone injured?
- Has someone else's property or vehicle been damaged?
- Are the damages above your deductible?
If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you should consider filing a claim. This will help us begin collecting the information needed to resolve your claim efficiently. You can also ask about filing a claim for damage to someone else’s property and discuss the details of the loss if you’re unsure whether to file a homeowner’s liability claim.
Still Have Questions About Filing a Claim?
If you plan to file a claim, you should do so now. Generally, for property policies, you have at least six months to file a claim. In some states, and depending on your policy, it may be longer.
You should file your claim with Travelers as soon as possible, even if you don't have all the necessary information. The faster you do so, the sooner we can start assisting you. You will have the opportunity to update information. Here is what we typically look for:
- Photos of the damage, if applicable
- Your contact information
- The name and contact information of any other involved parties
- Policy information, if available
- The type of loss you are reporting (auto, home, etc.) Remember, in the event of auto damage, your policy does not include mechanical breakdowns.
- The date the incident occurred
- A description of what happened
- A description of any injuries
When you call to file your claim, a Travelers Claim Customer Service professional will document the details of the loss and may provide you with a claim number. Your claim will then be assigned to one of our Claim professionals.
If you file a claim and we make a payment, it is very likely that your premium will increase. We can’t tell you exactly how much this will be because there are so many different factors that can affect your premium at the time of renewal. If a claim does impact your premium, the change may last for approximately 3 to 5 years.
