Who is required to carry workers compensation insurance in Vermont?
Generally, an employer with one or more full- or part-time employees is required by law to obtain workers compensation coverage. This includes employee(s) hired outside the state that work for the employer in Vermont.
Employers are not required to obtain coverage for casual workers who are not employed in the core functions of their business, anyone involved with amateur sports, workers in agriculture or farming jobs, and certain elected officials and volunteers. This includes employees who make a set state wage minimum per year or preceding year and those who have worked some part of a day within 20 different weeks in the current or preceding year.
