Who is required to carry workers compensation insurance in Wyoming?
In Wyoming, businesses must register with the state. After the registration process is completed, businesses will be assigned a North American Industry Classification System Code (NAICS code) based on a few factors. If a business has been assigned a code in the “extra hazardous” category, they will be classified as “required” and must carry Wyoming workers compensation coverage through the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services (DWS), Workers’ Compensation Division.
The businesses which are not classified as “extra hazardous” are placed in the “optional” category and have the choice to “opt in” and purchase workers comp coverage from DWS. Optional coverage may also be purchased from private insurers; however, “opt-in” businesses typically benefit most from obtaining coverage through DWS.
